  1. Today I want to introduce the movie "The Motorcycle Diaries" to all of you. As a matter of fact, I have recently watched it and I do think there are some ideas wanted to express from the film. And I would like to share my personal views with you.
The movie mainly traces the early travel of Ernesto Che Guevara, a 23-year-old medical student, and his friend Alberto Granado, a 29-year-old biochemist. They travelled 8000 across South America on an 500cc single cylinder motorcycle. During the journey, Guevara's mind has greatly changed as he witnesses the social injustices of exploited mine workers, persecuted communists, ostracized lepers, and the tattered descendants of a once-great Incan civilization. The movie ends with the declaration said by Guevara, originally born into un upper class family, displaying his willingness to fight and die for the cause of the poor, and his dream of seeing an untied Latin America.
Actually, courage, freedom, adventurous spirit, and some pranks are what we generation should possess. In the movie, we can clearly see that Guevara has these characteristics and even more such as humor and vigor. Then take us an example, as we lose these elements in our youth, perhaps the originally colorful life must be a bit gloomy. I cannot help but recall my initial ideal, insistence, and ever-existing dreams. Moreover, I do consider Guevara has something similar to do with Chinese writer Lu Xun(魯迅). They initially want to become a doctor to help people in need. However, as they go abroad to se the outside world do they find their thoughts are completely wrong. From Lu's experience, he finally realizes that only correcting people's thoughts to regard the matters can he save more people. Therefore, he gives up his doctor qualification and participates in writing. And Guevara, likes him, also wants to impoverish indigenous peasantry. He determines his mind and then takes part in political reform and social movement.
Perhaps, having some adventurous tries and doing something on impulse are essential for we college students. Otherwise, we may lose the opportunities to transform ourselves.

  2. When I was in junior high, I saw the move “Schools of Rock.” I have been having a dream of founding a band since then. Jack Black, who acted the main character, has been my favorite movie star since then. It is talk about the spirit of the music band. It is not a serious movie but a comedy. You must have seen the “Kong-Fu Panda.” The panda is dubbed by Jack Black. After seeing that movie you will know that Jack Black is the number one comedian. In the Schools of Rock, he is just the band member who was kicked out by his band. Later, he found the whole new band in an elementary school. He taught the children what is called the rock music, and made them love it. He also taught them the importance of cooperation, too. He divided them into several parts. Some are responsible for the light, some for the costume, some for the instruments, and some for the vocal. He would say to everyone that they are all the important part of the band. No one is the less important part in this band. I think we can learn something from this concept of this comedy. We can not take everything around us in granted. It is the people who give us support that make us ourselves. And we should play our roles well. We should not avoid to doing what we should do.

  3. A month ago I saw the movie “Bodyguards and Assassins”(十月圍城) and I think it is a great movie. The story setting is at the early 20th century in Hongkong, when Dr. Sun Yatsen was about to bring up the revolution. The mission of the bodyguards is to make sure that Dr. Sun Yatsen can arrive the meeting place and finish the pre-revolution meeting. The fighting scenes in the movie are really amusing that the actors and actresses completely show the audience how beautiful Chinese Kung Fu can be.

However, what touches me the most is the belief and determination of fulfilling their ideal. The bodyguards, which are actually farmers, traders and workers, are not well-trained fighters that it is very likely that they might not come back alive after the mission. But still they devote their lives to protect Dr. Sun Yatsen because they believe in Dr. Sun Yatsen and believe that one day the democratic China is possible. One of the lines that really beat me in my heart is when the young man told his friend that “I've lived for 16 years and now I finally realize that I was born to do this (be the substitute of Dr. Sun Yatsen).” It is such a dangerous job because he might be assassinated by the Qing government at anytime. The determination in the sentence overwhelms me that I almost cry out for such a marvelous young man.

I enjoyed the movie very much and I was deeply touched by the revolutionary feeling. I hope I can also devote such emotion into what I'm doing now in my club. =]

  4. Dear Alfee,

Again, I'm so glad that you mentioned this movie. I constantly heard people saying “The Motorcycle Diaries” is a great movie about Ernesto Che Guevara, but I never really have the time to watch the movie. Indeed, I think having some adventure do help people understand the world they're in.

Partly because of the club I'm in, I've learned a lot from the peers in the club. With the very different point of view, I understand that the problems in our society are not that simple. In addition, I personally have joined several demonstrations and parades. Usually we see on the media that when people are in the demonstrations or parades, they are usually irrational and impulsive. This is just a some part of the truth. Why do people choose to go on a demonstration or a parade, which are relatively energy- and time- consuming? This is because they have no other way to tell the society what they want and to release their anger toward social injustice.

Before I really get to know more about the social issues, I always thought that the demonstrations and parades are just those who are irrational, greedy, and lazy trying to get more attention from the society in order to get more money from the government. But it doesn't really goes like that.

  5. Dear Judy,

I have some similar thoughts on this movie. The bodyguards initially believes in and insists on what they are going to do is right and meaningful. And obviously it is true. There is no deny that in the process of attaining the goal is full of frustrations and sufferings. However, due to the dilemma, we can see how precious they are to persist in their ideal from the beginning to the end. And the history once again proves us that nothing is impossible. As long as we make an endless effort and hold positive attitudes, we can make everything possible.

    Thanks for your sharing:)

  6. Dear Martin,

Thank you for sharing the movie. I know the movie “Schools of Rock” but I haven’t got the chance to see it. However, I once saw a movie which has a similar plot called “Les Choristes” (放牛班的春天). It’s a story about how the teacher uses music and choir change the young kids’ life. I think the two movies are both pointing out some education issues, such as how important a creative, patient and determined teacher can be, and what the current rigid education system has brought to our society.

The current education system in Taiwan is also very problematic. After graduated from high school and attend university, I found out that over 95% of what I’ve learned in high school is not useful in college and some of them are even misleading when I’m studying in college. Then, why should I spend so many years to study various subjects that are not helpful at all? I think the Ministry of Education should rethink about what need to be taught in high school and what need not. In addition, most of the students in Taiwan do not know what they want. I mean, of course people want to have good jobs, nice salaries and wonderful place to live. But people don’t really have their core value to live with. This is more or less like a ghost drifting around, knowing nowhere to go.

What I’m trying to say is that I think our education system still has a long way to go. We need to renew our teaching materials and methods, build up a better student counsel frame, and bring up a more complete teacher training system.

    Thanks for sharing. =]
