Reflection

1. Please offer your suggestions as how we can grade your performance better?

As a matter of the fact, I do think the regualr writing and revising through teacher's conference is a good way to advance our composition abilities. Also, before we submit our assignments, our works are checked by the partners. By means of it, both of us can find out mutual drawbacks and thereby improve it. However, I consider if our assignments are checked by different partners, the effectiveness in learning would be greater. Since fixed partner may only have his perspectives, the correction styles are often the same as before. Perhaps, with the slight change of it, it can add some beneficial variations to our composition learning.

2. Based on the criteria you suggested in Q1, please give a score to yourself and explain why you've earned it.

If the top score is 10, I will five 8 points to myself. Whenever I do the online task, I really pay attention to it and put my every effort to do it well. I manage to use some transitional words to let the flow of my artical more smoothly. Moreover, in order to increase my vocabulary, I use different words to express my ideas as possible as I can.

3. Based on the criteria you suggested in Q1, please give a score you your partner and explain why he has earned it.

The score I will give my partner Jay is 9. Although he often stands in different shoes on the matters, I appreciate for it because it can stimulate my critical thinking and open my mind to accept others' opinions. Besides, his variable writing styles are quite appealing to me. As my compositions frequently tend to be serious and boring, I am eager to learn from his flexible ways. Through the shared comments, I do believe both of us can enhance our composition ability to the higher extent.

  1. Q1: Please offer your suggestions as to how we can grade your performance better?
I think the crux of the problem that “Rights to Write” project has is that we and our partners don’t really have full right to write freely to each other. I mean, we’re told to write on one particular issue a week respectively and post our comments on the blog, and that’s it; the further exchange of opinions doesn’t occur at all. The benefit “Rights to Write” projects brings us is that it gives us a chance to take the first step and express ourselves, but without further discussion on that particular subject, our comments posted on the blog would still be just one-way communication instead of mutual one. As for how our performance could be graded better, I think teachers could focus on such respects as grammar, diction, content and last but not least, our writing style, because though journal is a less organized and serious form of communication, we still have to follow basic grammatical rules, use the right word so as not to create misunderstanding, and maintain our own unique writing styles. If based on these respects, I think the grading would be more credible.

Q2: Based on the criteria you suggested in Q1, please give a score to yourself and explain how you’ve earned it.
If the total is 10, I’ll give myself 5, because I think my performance is worse than my previous years. I’m less motivated and more self-indulgent this semester, breaking my principle that I would never skip class. But the “good” thing is that at least I’m aware of my willfulness before it’s too late; I still have time to find out my goal and muster up the energy to do something. So I give myself a moderate 5.

Q3: Based on the criteria you suggested in Q1, please give a score to your partner and explain how s/he has earned it.
I think Alfee deserves an 8, because in his writings, I not only see many insights but also the frequent use of new vocabularies, which is a very good habit. Many English majors think they’re good enough at English simply because they’re “English majors”, and thus refuse to memorize vocabularies like they do in senior high, not to mention using new words. That way, their English literally stop improving. So it’s good to see Alfee often use new words. The only thing I suggest is that when he wants to use a word that you’re not familiar enough, try to first look it up in different English-English dictionaries such as Longman, Cambridge…etc, and compare the definitions they offer, and then look it up in a English Chinese dictionary to check out the Chinese counterpart of it. Though it takes a lot of time, it does help gaining your proficiency at composition (but I didn’t care much about my diction here. Sorry about that). The other reason I give him an 8 is that now Alfee is only a freshman, who still has a lot of room for improvement, and I hope after 4 years of solid training in English Dep., you can give yourself an 10!
