Week Five: I Have A Dream

As Wang and Kuo, the so-called rays of Taiwan, are both injured in this year's MLB series, our daily life seems to lack spices to add in. Both of them erect the goal for all of us attain our dream all the time. Recently, to our surprise, we can recapture the similar passion from two people's stories. One is Yen-Po Chen who does the expedition to the North Pole in order to achieve his dream of challenging all the most marathons in the world. Another one is Yu-Chen Lin who takes part in the contest of being a singer superstar. Although his appearance is not out of the ordinary and even bad-looking, he still makes his effort to singing and fulfill his dream step by step. Moreover, his wonderful voice and amazing performance on the website are still more enhancing his popularity around the world. From these two examples, we can see they both hold thier ideals and never gives up in it.

Q1. After reading these two' stories, do you have any reflection wanting to share with us?

Q2. Do you have the dream? What your dream is? And how can you attain the goal you set in? How can you positively confront the following frustrations on the process of pursuing ideals?

  1. After watching the two people’s story, I think that we should have the courage to persuade our dream. There are about six billion people in the world, why could some of the people make their dream come true and some not? The problem is our attitude. I have ever read a book “secret,” it said that if we believe something firmly, it will come true in the near future. I think that is true. If we don’t believe we can do something, then we will think that we can’t make it, and we will not try our best to do something. For example, I had a dream to be a cook when I was a junior high school student. However, my parents hoped that I could study in the senior high as a “normal child.” To satisfy their hope, I chose not to study in the vocational school. I think it is a pity because I think I can do very well if I learn in that school. I just give up the dream. I didn’t have the courage to decide. I just lost the perfect chance. After that time, I will say that we should decide the most important thing that other people can not decide for us. It is our dream, not other people’s. Just go ahead and not to be afraid. Believe, and you can succeed.

  2. American actor, Charles Chaplin, once said, "You have to believe in yourself. That's the secret of success." Indeed, we all should believe in ourselves to pursue what we really want. And in most cases, we tend to lack for courage and thereby give up halfway. Therefore, from these two's stories, I can strongly feel how great the faith in our minds works and they also inspire me to deliberate on what I truly long for achieving.
Last weekend, I caught the chance of spring break to gather my bosom friends together. We share with on another our college lives and plans for the future. I cannot help but recall my dream in senior high. Honestly speaking, my initial aspiration is to attend the Dept. of Diplomacy in Chengchi University. In my senior high, I joined my school's interact club. And once I was represented as the guest to visit the TAIMUN. (TAIMUN stands for Taiwan's international school annual Model United Nations conference, which aims at getting student of international and local schools to interact with one another in role-playing situations on global problems like human rights, global ecological environment, and the international affairs and so on.) It was an impressive experience. Experiencing the UN-liked atmosphere, I realized through the interaction and discussion between people from a variety of countries and school systems, the objective of looking and caring beyond national boundaries has been achieved. From that moment on, the dream of being a diplomat ignited in my heart. Since I often paid close attention to the latest national wide news and read some related articles of politics, fulfilling the dream plays an important role in my life. However, to my astonishment, I failed on the entrance examination. I did not get the scores as expected.
In the talk, the former memories were traced back, and I begin to think how I can take the next step. As a saying goes, "whenever God closes the door, he always opens another." I do believe the previous frustrated experience did not strike me down. What I need is the initial passion for having a big and persevering in making it come true.

  3. I appreciate and admire the people who have their own dreams and eagerly marching toward their goals. It is really precious to have the courage to step forward and to fulfill one’s ideal. I think it is very important to find out the call of oneself. Just like the mentioned in the description of this topic, Yen-Po Chen finished the expedition to the North Pole in order to achieve his dream, and Yu-Chen Lin took part in the singing contest to fulfill his dream of being a singer, these are all brave movements to attain one's dream.

After knowing that Taiwan EPA can ignore the decision of the highest court, our government can kill the productive agricultural lands and covered them with the cement, they can force people to leave their homes due to the so-called "public interest," and people don't really care much about what's really happening in our society, I feel that I have to do something to make Taiwan better.

My dream is an ideal that is still far, far away. I hope that one day there is a world that has no war, pollution, exploitation and discrimination but full of social justice, equality and environmental-friendly industries, and the people are highly aware of the issues happening around themselves. Though this might sound unattainable, I believe that when we are aware of our situation we're in and what our government and corporations are doing, we are marching toward a better society.

  4. Dear Martin,

Let me tell you a story. When I was about to take the entrance exam at the senior year of junior high school, my teacher kept telling me that I'm a very good student that I deserve the best, at least the second best senior high school in Taipei. However, after the entrance exam, my mother refuse to let me hand in the application form of my ideal high school because she thought I wasn't that good to get into that school and it would be just a waste of time to go through the application process. Thus I lost the chance to get into the school I like. Afterwards, my teacher told me that it is really a pity that if I have handed in the application form, things will be different.

Of course I was very angry with my mother when I had to attend the senior high school which I thought I didn't belong to. However, now when I look back as a college student, it doesn't really matter that much. Indeed, it was a pity that I didn't have the chance to try because of my mother. If I would tougher and more determined, I could have at least grab the opportunity and hand in the application form. But what I've learned, discovered, and experienced during my high school years compensate my negative feeling. And afterwards I get into English department which I have longed for a long time.

What I'm trying to say is that although we might not catch each chance to do what we want, later on in our life, we can still have other chances. It's really okay if we unluckily miss the opportunity. Just make sure that next time we will get the next one. Don't give up your dream so easily. =]

    Thank you for sharing.

  5. Dear Alfee,

It's a pity that you didn't get to the major you want. But as a student major in foreign language and literature, it's still okay for you to become a diplomat in the future. What's more, your language ability will be a huge bonus when you are doing job hunting. I don't know if there is a correspondent courses(學程) in NCCU, but in FJU there is a series courses about diplomat(外交學程). There must have some information about the field in your school, just go and ask your teacher. It will be very helpful if you can take some related courses before you graduate from NCCU.

Hope you can fulfill your dream. Good luck!
